BLACKSBURG, Va. – As she’s done the previous two meets, Martina Schultze came away with another win in the pole vault, this time though, the sophomore broke Victoria von Eynatten’s school record by a half an inch as she made her first attempt at 14-4.5 (4.38m). After the weekend, the vault currently ranks third nationally.

In all, Virginia Tech picked up 17 top five-results on the weekend at the “Doc” Hale VT Elite Meet, which included four wins.

The distance medley relays led off the running events on the day and Tech earned a pair of top-fives in the event. Despite a strong final leg from sophomore Sarah Rapp, Maryland was able to hold off the Hokies by two hundredths of a second, as the team of Rapp, Sammy Dow, Shalonda Mitchell and Paige Kvatunas finished second in a time of 11:45.78. With two Tech teams in the men’s field, the Hokies came in fifth and sixth with the team of Kevin DeWillie, Travis Correa, Juan Campos and Brian Welch holding off George Carter, McNamee, James Ertel and Ryan Kuhns.

Natalie Woodford ran a season-best time in the 400 meters at 55.99 to finish third in the open. After missing on his first attempt at 7-2.5 (2.20m), Ronnie Black converted on his second attempt. With a three-way tie at the top, the senior finished second after the tiebreaker was determined.

In the men’s pole vault, Stephan Munz increased his top mark of the season to 17-5 (5.31m), finishing second behind Shawn Barber of Arkon, who currently holds the top vault in the country.

Finishing out the day, the Tech 4x400 relay teams each took home second-place results and season-best times. The women’s team made up of Yvonne Amegashie, Jameice DeCoster, Leah Nugent and Woodford clocked a time of 3:42. 20, while the men’s team comprised of Jonathan McCants, Jeff Artis-Gray, Tadashi Pinder and Eric Hoepker finished 13 tenths of second behind Georgia at 3:13.33.

The Hokies will return to Rector Field House next weekend for the VT Challenge before they host the ACC Championships a week later.
