BLACKSBURG - A nine-run second inning and an 11-run lead after six helped the No. 25 Virginia Tech Hokies register a 14-10 victory over visiting Radford on Wednesday evening in nonconference action at English Field.
Radford (5-2) actually led 2-0 after the top of the second after an RBI single by Kyle Fairbanks, who also allowed Josh Reavis to cross the plate as he was being chased in a rundown later in the frame.
However, Tech's offense exploded in its half of the inning, as the Hokies sent 14 batters to the plate, batting around for the first time this season. Andrew Rash started off the onslaught with a solo home run, his first of the year, 32nd of his career. It was part of a four-hit night for the senior, who also drove in three and scored twice.
Brendon Hayden, who scored twice in the game, drew a walk, Alex Perez, who had a two-hit night, double and Matt Dauby then singled in a run, part of a three-hit, three-RBI, two-run night for the freshman.
Sean Keselica, who started the game on the mound as well and picked up his first win of the year, drove in a run, as did Chad Pinder on fielder's choices. With two outs, Mark Zagunis singled, part of his three-hit, two-RBI, two-run evening, and Tyler Horan was hit by a pitch, which brought Rash back to the plate.
Rash singled, Hayden walked again, Perez drew a walk and Dauby came up with a two-RBI single to end the scoring in the frame.
Off the bench, Ryan Burns had two hits, a run and an RBI, while a number of freshman pitchers saw time on the mound with the huge advantage.
Keselica went four innings and struck out three, while Luis Collazo pitched two with three strikeouts, Matt Tulley went one inning with a strikeout, and Tim Kelly and Sean Kennedy worked the eighth as Radford mounted a comeback attempt.
Clark Labitan closed the game with a scoreless ninth to improve the Hokies to 8-1 on the season.
The team now travels to Cary, N.C., to take part in the Irish Baseball Classic. Tech opens its four-game weekend with two games on Friday, starting at noon against Rhode Island.
