Hokie men remain ranked No. 16 nationally

Complete Week Six Rankings

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Virginia Tech men’s track & field team is ranked No. 16 nationally, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday in its week six outdoor computer rankings. The Hokies maintained their No. 16 ranking for the second straight week.

Tech, the Atlantic Coast Conference outdoor champions, currently has 12 men listed among the NCAA’s top-25 in their respective events. They are: Keith Ricks and Darrell Wesh (100 meters), Michael Hammond and Chris Walizer (1500 meters), Will Mulherin (5000 meters), Hunter Hall, Joe Davis and Mike Miller (pole vault), Hasheem Halim (triple jump), Alexander Ziegler and Denis Mahmic (hammer throw) and Matthias Treff (javelin throw). In addition, the 4x100 meter relay of Jeff Artis-Gray, Wesh, Jonathan McCants and Ricks is among Division I’s top-25. The Hokies continue to be the top ranked men’s squad in the Southeast Region.

Over the weekend, Tech’s men entered competitors in four events and came away victorious in all four. All-Americans and 2012 ACC champions Ziegler (hammer throw), Treff (javelin throw) and Hall (pole vault) all earned wins Saturday at Clemson’s second annual Bob Pollock Invitational, while Luka Mustafic (shot put) won at the Duke Twilight Sunday.

Ziegler, the defending national champion in the hammer throw, won the event at Clemson with a season best mark of 240-1 (73.17m). Treff, last year’s NCAA runner-up, secured the victory in the javelin throw with a mark of 242-10 (74.02m).

Hall won his third consecutive and fourth overall pole vault competition of the season with a clearance of 17-3 (5.26m). In addition, Davis was second as he also cleared 17-3 and Miller was fifth for Tech at 16-9.25 (5.11m).

Mustafic wrapped up the weekend as he won the shot put at the Duke with a throw of 57-4.75 (17.49m).

The Hokies are scheduled wrap up the regular season this weekend by competing in four “last chance” meets as student-athletes have their final opportunity to qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Meet. Tech is slated to send competitors to Roanoke College’s Twilight on Thursday, Clemson’s Tiger Qualifier on Friday and Saturday and NC State’s Wolfpack Last Chance and NC A&T’s Aggie Classic on Sunday.

The NCAA East Preliminary Meet is scheduled for May 24-26 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. North Florida is serving as the host institution.
