BLACKSBURG, Va. – For the seventh time this season, the Virginia Tech baseball team has registered a walk-off victory, this time it was a 4-3 win over Liberty as Chad Morgan notched the RBI single that scored the game-winning run on Tuesday evening at English Field.
With the non-conference win, the Hokies also pushed their non-league win streak to 18 straight and improved to 34-18 overall, while Liberty dropped to 36-17 with the defeat.
Facing a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning, the Hokies were able to plate a pair of runs to tie the game. Kyle Wernicki and Alex Perez brought home the two runs, with Johnny Morales scoring on a fielder’s choice and Wernicki coming in on a Perez double.
The game remained tied until the ninth, when Morales led off the frame with a double, Brendon Hayden drew a walk and Morales stole third to put runners on the corners. With one out, Morgan drove a ball into the right center field gap, bringing home Morales with the winning run.
The win was also the team's 25th come-from-behind victory of the season and the 19th time they have trailed entering their at-bats in the fifth and come out on top.
Tyler Horan gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead in the first when he launched his team-leading 14th home run of the year off the batter’s eye wall in center field.
Liberty answered with a pair of runs in the third frame off Tech starter Patrick Scoggin, then took the two-run lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Dalton Sype.
Tech used seven pitchers in the game. After Scoggin, it went Devin Burke (1 IP/1 K), Hayden (2.2/2), Jake Joyce (0.1/0), Manny Martir (1.1/0), Jake Atwell (0.1/1) and Tanner McIntyre (0.1/0).
McIntyre actually came into the top of the ninth with runners on the corners and got Alex Close to fly out to right. With the Hokies winning in the bottom of the frame, he improved his record to 7-0 on the year.
The Flames used five pitchers with starter Patrick Eckelbarger throwing three innings and Jared Lyons pitching the last 3.1 and suffering the loss. He is now 2-4 on the season.
Tech will head out to Chapel Hill, N.C. and finish out the regular season with a three-game ACC series with the No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels. The series starts on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
