BLACKSBURG - The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech wrestling team cruised to a 40-6 win over NC State Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum to improve to 4-0 in the conference and claim its 23rd ACC win in the past 24 matches.
Jarrod Garnett, ranked fourth in the country at 125 pounds, rebounded from a tough loss Saturday at UNC to dominate Joe DeAngelo in the first match. He used six takedowns and a riding time point to pick up the 15-4 major decision.
At 133 pounds, Erik Spjut got the first takedown of the match and used an escape in the second period to hold off Sam Speno to win 3-2. Speno got a takedown in the second period, but chose neutral in the third and couldn’t get anything on Spjut as Spjut held on for the win.
Sixth-ranked Nick Brascetta took care of business at 149 pounds, picking up a takedown in the first and third periods, plus over 2 minutes of riding time to beat Thomas Gantt, 7-1. At 157 pounds, seventh-ranked Jesse Dong had his way with Matt Nereim, turning him three times in the first period and again in the second stanza to take a 15-0 technical fall in the second period.
At 174 pounds, Austin Gabel used four takedowns to push the action against Patrick Davis, winning 12-8 after accumulating 3:14 of riding time. Nick Vetterlein dominated Keegan Cerwinski early on, picking up four takedowns in the first period before picking up the pin in the second period. At 197 pounds, Derrick Borlie took down Bill Cook and pinned him in just 55 seconds to make quick work of his opponent. It was the first pin of the season for both Borlie and Vetterlein.
David Marone continued to wrestle well, picking up a 14-3 major decision over Mike Kosoy. The sixth-year senior used four takedowns and a nearfall combo to pick up his 85th career win, moving into a tie for 14th place all-time at Tech.
The Hokies forfeited at 141 pounds and the Wolfpack forfeited at 165 pounds. NC State managed just six offensive points in the eight matches, coming on three takedowns.
Tech (11-2, 4-0) will return to action next weekend, taking on a pair of nationally ranked teams. The Hokies will travel to College Park on Friday night for a match with No. 23 Maryland at 7 p.m. and then return home on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match with No. 13 Oklahoma on Senior Day.
