BLACKSBURG – After walking off seven times last season, Virginia Tech used a Tyler Horan two-run home run to register its first walk off of the 2013 season as the Hokies defeated visiting Longwood, 7-5, in 10 innings at English Field Tuesday evening.
The game entered extra innings tied at 4-4, but the Lancers plated a single run with a two-out single by Justin Lacey to retake a lead it held until the sixth frame.
However, Travis Burnette, who was in his fourth inning of relief and fell to 3-4 with the loss, allowed a lead-off pinch-hit double to Gary Schneider and after Andrew Rash sacrificed him to third, the Hokies had the tying run just 90 feet away.
Pinch hitter Chad Morgan worked a walk and moved to second when Chad Pinder drove in Schneider with a grounder to short.
Longwood (16-18) went to its pen and brought in Dylan Caruso to face Horan and on a 2-0 pitch, Horan took Caruso deep for his team-high tying fifth home run of the season. In head coach Pete Hughes time in the Tech dugout, only Austin Wates, Rash and now Horan have hit walf-off home runs.
The Hokies trailed 4-1 after four innings, as the Lancers got two runs off both starter Sean Keselica and Luis Collazo. The only Hokie run was from a Kyle Wernicki RBI grounder plating Mark Zagunis in the second.
Rash would go deep in the fifth frame, hitting a solo shot for his fifth home run of the year, the 36th of his career. He’s already hit the most home runs as a Hokie in the ACC and is just seven shy of the top five ever hit at the school.
Tech tied the game in the sixth by using an RBI single by Zagunis, scoring Pinder who singled and stole second and an RBI single from Brendon Hayden that scored Zagunis with his team-leading 37th run of the year.
Jake Joyce picked up the win on the mound, improving to 5-1, after tossing three frames and striking out two. Ricky Hodges threw a pair of scoreless relief innings for the Hokies, while Luis Collazo (3.1IP/4H/2R) also saw action out of the pen.
Tech (22-12) now looks ahead to its next ACC series, when the Hokies welcome No. 1 North Carolina to English Field for a three-game set starting on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
