GREENSBORO, N.C. – 11 members of the Virginia Tech track & field team have been named to the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team for indoor track & field, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Tech’s honorees included six men, junior Ronnie Black (Newport News, Va.), sophomore Scott Campbell (Salem, Va.), senior Hasheem Halim (Lilburn, Ga.), freshman Luka Mustafic (Rakitje, Croatia), senior Chris Walizer (Hershey, Pa.) and junior Alexander Ziegler (Dischingen, Germany) and five women, junior Sammy Dow (Midlothian, Va.), junior Frances Dowd (Fairfax, Va.), sophomore Paige Kvartunas (Springfield, Va.), senior Ogechi Nwaneri (Maplewood, N.J.) and junior Natalie Woodford (Roanoke, Va.).

Ziegler, Halim and Nwaneri were named to the conference’s all-academic team for the third time in indoor track & field, while Black and Walizer earned the academic award for the second time.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Four Hokies, Ziegler (weight throw, 3rd), Halim (triple jump, 3rd), Black (high jump, 13th) and Dowd (800 meters, 15th) earned All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. In addition, Ziegler (weight throw, 2nd), Walizer (mile, 2nd), Halim (triple jump, 2nd), Mustafic (shot put, 3rd), and Dowd (800 meters, 3rd) were All-ACC performers during the indoor season.

Combining the men and women, the Hokies have the third highest total of student-athletes on the all-academic team. Florida State topped the list with 13, while Duke had 12 and Tech 11.

A total of 87 student-athletes (42 men and 45 women) were named to the ACC All-Academic Team for indoor track & field. Duke’s Curtis Beach and Florida State’s Michelle Jenije were named the conference’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
