BLACKSBURG – Every Virginia Tech player in the starting lineup notched a hit, but none had as good a night as Brendon Hayden in the Hokies' 12-5 victory over visiting Northeastern on Wednesday night in nonconference action at English Field.
Hayden tied his career high with a four-hit night, which included a pair of doubles, knocked in three runs and scored twice. Mark Zagunis comes close, with a three-hit, three-run, one RBI effort, while Saige Jenco, Sean Keselica and Phil Sciretta each had a pair of hits.
The Hokies pounded out a season-high 17 hits and scored in double figures for the first time since April 1 (11 runs versus James Madison). The 12 runs were the most since March 12, when they had 14 versus VCU.
Northeastern (21-24) kept the game close through five innings, cutting a four-run deficit to one in the third and making it 7-5 in the fifth. Connor Lyons and Michael Foster each had two RBIs for the Huskies, who scored their runs on just five hits.
Tech (20-28-1) broke the game open with runs in the sixth, seventh and eight frames and got solid pitching from Jon Woodcock (1.1 IP, 1 K), Luke Scherzer (2.0 IP, 2 Ks) and Brad Markey (1.0 IP, 1 K) over the last four-plus innings.
Matt Tulley (1-1), who started the game for the Hokies, went three innings and allowed just one hit – a two-RBI triple as the two walks he surrendered came around to score. Isaac Lippert (1-4) took the loss for the Huskies.
In the game, Jenco stole his 20th base of the year, becoming just the second Hokie to reach 20 stolen bases in the past 10 years. Nate Parks is the only other Tech player and he actually stole at least 30 bags twice (30, 2006; 39, 2007).
With his three hits, Zagunis now has 208 career hits, the fifth-most for a Hokie junior – as he recently passed both Ronnie Shaban (203) and Brad Bauder (204). Next on the list is Trey McCoy, and his 213 hits.
Tech will take the weekend off before returning to English Field to host William & Mary next Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.
