BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech registered its second consecutive shutout and its offense exploded as the Hokies posted an 18-0 victory on Wednesday night at English Field over the visiting VMI Keydets for its 17th straight non-conference win.
Every Hokie that came to the plate had at least one hit and of the starters all of them scored at least one run and eight registered at least one RBI. The offense was led by Andrew Rash, who went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI, Chad Pinder, two hits and three RBI, and Tyler Horan, two hits and four RBI.
Tech (32-16) led 5-0 entering the fourth frame when that trio all hit solo home runs, with Horan leading off the inning with a blast and Rash and Pinder going back-to-back to push the team’s lead to 8-0.
The Hokies doubled their lead in the sixth, as they sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight times. Brendon Hayden was the only player to register a multi-RBI hit in the frame, a two-run double.
On the mound, Patrick Scoggin (2-1) worked five scoreless frames, scattering two hits and a walk, and striking out four. Devin Burke, Manny Martir (2 K), Colin O’Keefe (1) and Ricky Hodges (1) all worked an inning to close out the game and saw the Hokies turn double plays in the sixth, eighth and ninth, pushing their total to an ACC-best 49.
VMI (14-32) managed just five hits in the game, but two were by Brandon Diamond. Starter Adam Lopez (0-3) suffered the loss.
Tech will take the next days off from competition before returning to the field for its final home ACC series of the year. The Hokies will face NC State next weekend (May 11-13) at English Field with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
Additional Notes: The 2012 Hokies became just the fourth team since 1985 (when the team won 30 games) to win at least 20 home games – 1988 (25), 2010 (24) and 1990 (22). Tech’s 22 non-conference wins this season are the most since the 1995 team also won 22 (does not include postseason) in 13 more games. Also, they have now won 17 straight non-conference games, the longest streak since 1982 (20). Fitting with the night’s theme, the last time the Hokies scored at least 15 runs against VMI was in 1989 and it was the largest win in the series since 1986. In terms of games, this is the longest running series in Tech’s history and the Hokies own a 126-46-1 record all-time against the Keydets, 70-16-1 at home and 14-1 at English Field.
