CORAL GABLES, Fla. - On the final day of competition at the Hurricane Invitational, the Virginia Tech track & field teams ended its first meet of the outdoor season with nine finishes in the top five. Jonathan McCants and Leah Nugent each came away with their first wins of the outdoor season.
McCants captured Tech's lone win of the afternoon as won the 200 meters with a new personal record at 21.03. His time was four hundredths of a second better than his previous record as he closes in ever so slightly to a sub-21 time. His mark is third in school history, only trailing Keith Ricks and Andre Davis.
In the first hurdle event of the day for the women, the 100-meter hurdles, Nugent came in second at 13.77, before grabbing 400-meter hurdle title later in the afternoon. The sophomore captured the win by clocking in at 60.08
The Hokies opened up the day in the 4x100 relays as both the men's and women's teams came away with fourth-place finishes. The men's team of Darrell Wesh, Jonathan McCants, Jeff Artis-Gray and Tadashi Pinder clocked in at 41.75, just over six tenths of a second back of the lead. The women's team comprised of Jameice DeCoster, Yeni Aromolaran, Shaquera Leach and Yvonne Amegashie finished in 46.74.
Artis-Gray picked up a fourth-place result on his own in the 400 meters. The senior clocked in at 48.21 to win his heat, but after all heats were complete he was sitting in fourth.
The men's 100 meters saw Tech go four-five as Jonathan McCants came in at 10.65, just ahead of Tadashi Pinder's pace of 10.68.
The women's 800 meters saw another Hokie finish in fourth as Natalie Woodford finished the race in 2:17.30.
The Hokies will be back in the Sunshine State next weekend as they travel to Tallahassee to compete in the Florida State Relays.
