BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team battled back from a five-run deficit to take a one-run lead, but visiting Radford put 10 runs on the board in the eighth and picked up the 15-7 victory Monday night in nonconference action at English Field.

The Highlanders scored single runs in each of the first three frames then added two in the top of the fourth to jump out to that five-run advantage.

Tech, though cut that lead to a single run in the home half of the frame when Mac Caples hit a grand slam home run over the left field fence. It was the sophomore’s second home run of the season and the Hokies’ first grand slam since Brendon Hayden hit one versus Radford at English Field on Feb. 25, 2014.

Hayden then drove home Alex Perez with a double in the fifth frame to tie the game at 5-5 before the Hokies took their only lead of the night when Saige Jenco scored from third on a wild pitch.

Radford (20-11) then sent 14 men to the plate in the top of the eighth and, at one point, saw seven Highlanders reach base. The final line score of the frame was 10 runs, seven hits, two walks, one hit by pitch and one error.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Caples was hit by his ninth pitch of the year to drive in his fifth run of the night, a season-high for a Hokie this season.

Connor Coward started the game for Tech and went 3.2 frames with two strikeouts, but allowed five runs, three earned. Packy Naughton tossed 3.1 scoreless innings out of the pen with three strikeouts, but Sean Kennedy suffered the loss as he started that eighth frame.

Tech (17-17) plays another game on Tuesday night at English Field against Charlotte at 5:30 p.m. before heading out on the road for an ACC series at Miami.
