BLACKSBURG – Just like in Saturday’s game, Virginia Tech baseball trailed Maryland by two entering the later frames of the contest. However, unlike the day before, the Hokies were able to get the tying runs home in the sixth and the go-ahead runs in the seventh and held on for a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at English Field.
The victory also gave the Hokies the ACC series win over the Terrapins, their sixth straight against Maryland, and improved the team to 7-11 in the ACC – the exact same mark as last year’s squad 18 games into the conference season.
The scene was similar to the Saturday game in that Tech was able to get runners on base early, but stranded seven through the first five frames and hit into three double plays – two with the bases loaded.
Maryland (21-13, 7-10 ACC) used two runs in the fourth – RBIs from Nick Cieric and Jose Cuas – and a run in the fifth on a LaMonte Wade single to erase a one-run deficit and take a 3-1 lead.
But the Hokies continued to put pressure on the Terrapins, chasing their starter Jake Drossner in the fifth and finally breaking through with the tying runs in the sixth.
An RBI double off the bat of Ricky Surum brought home Sean Keselica and was followed by an RBI single by Ryan Tufts to knot the score at 3-3.
Tech starter Brad Markey lasted 6.1 innings before being relieved by Jon Woodcock in the seventh after walking Tim Lewis with one out. Woodcock would get Charlie White to ground into a double play – Tech’s third turned in the game – to end the frame.
They then took the lead in the home half of the seventh as they sent nine Hokies to the plate. Mark Zagunis doubled, Brendon Hayden walked and after Phil Sciretta sacrificed them a base, Keselica was intentionally walked.
Kyle Wernicki, who scored on a wild pitch in the second, was then hit by a pitch to plate the go-ahead run and Surum and Tufts did it again with RBI singles to push the Tech lead to 6-3.
Maryland added an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth, but Tanner McIntyre came on to pick up his first career save for the Hokies, while Woodcock improved to 1-1 with the win.
Tufts ended the day with four hits, while Surum and Zagunis each had three.
Tech (17-17-1, 7-11 ACC) returns to action on Monday night as the team travels to Lynchburg to face Liberty in a contest set for 7 p.m.
