CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Behind a pair of first-inning home runs and a strong start from Tanner McIntyre, Virginia Tech defeated Charlotte, 6-1, in nonconference action Tuesday night at Hayes Stadium.

Sean Keselica hit a one-out solo home run and Mark Zagunis smacked a two-run shot to put the Hokies up three in the top of the first inning. A 49er error allowed two more runs to cross the plate in the second, Gary Schneider with a sac fly and Tyler Horan with a bases loaded walk to make it 5-0.

That was all the run support Tanner McIntyre (2-0), and the Tech bullpenm would need to register the win. McIntyre worked six innings, allowed just two hits, walked three batters and struck out two while not allowing a hit until the fourth.

After Andrew Rash scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 6-0, Ricky Hodges – one inning, one strikeout – and Jake Joyce – two innings pitched, one unearned run – finished off the game.

Charlotte (10-5) received quality innings from its bullpen – seven innings, one unearned run – but started Jason Harris – two innings, five runs, three earned – took the loss.

Virginia Tech (13-4) stays on the road for another midweek nonconference contest, taking on Elon on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
