BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior high jumper Ronnie Black closed out the Hokie Invitational with an exclamation point for Virginia Tech as he topped his school record with a jump of 7-4.25 (2.24m). On the day, the Hokies had 12 top-five finishes to make it 25 during the two day meet.
Black’s mark is currently tied for eighth in the NCAA this season. While neither Black or Kris Kornegay-Gober of NC State could make the next mark of 7-5.25 (2.27m), Black defeated the 2012 ACC Indoor Champion on a tiebreaker since he converted on his first attempt at 7-2.25 (2.19m).
As she did a week ago, Martina Schultze opened up the second day by winning the seeded pole vault. She slightly increased last week’s mark with today’s vault of 14-0.5 (4.28m), which remains the third best mark recorded in the NCAA this season. Stephan Munz followed up Schultze by making it a Hokie sweep in the day’s pole vault events as he won the men’s title with a mark of 17-1 (5.21m). Chris Uhle finished third at 16-1.25 (4.91m), while Jared Allison was in fifth at 15-7.25 (4.76m).
In the men’s 400 meters, Tech grabbed two spots in the top four as senior Jonathan McCants set a new personal best after clocking a time of 48.31, while Eric Hoepker wasn’t too far behind him, taking fourth at 49.30.
The Hokies earned a top four finisher in each side of the 200 meters as Jameice DeCoster finished in 24.63 for fourth and Tadashi Pinder took third one the men’s side at 21.94.
The Hokies will take next weekend off before returning to Rector Field House for the VT Elite Meet on Feb. 8-9.
