BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team rebounded from a tough Saturday by coming back to beat the University of North Carolina 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

A day after getting shut out twice by the Tar Heel pitchers, the Hokies made adjustments to get things rolling. In the third inning, with two outs, Bkaye Smith reached on a fielding error by pitcher Danielle Spaulding. It proved to be a big error as the next batter - Richelle McGarva - blasted a two-run home run to left field to make it 2-0. It was the junior's fourth home run of the season.

One inning later, freshman Courtney Liddle crushed her ninth home run of the season, a monstrous solo shot down the left field line that landed on Spring Road and rolled across the street toward Lane Stadium.

In the sixth inning, Liddle led off with a walk and pinch runner Stephanie Kujawa stole second base before moving up on Kristin Graham’s single. Head coach Scot Thomas inserted pinch hitter Marra Hvozdovic into the lineup and she put down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to plate Kujawa and make it 4-0.

Kenzie Roark (W, 7-17), was masterful as she flirted with a perfect game. The junior allowed just two hits while walking none and striking out out three. Brittany McKinney led off the fifth inning with a single to left field and Spaulding dribbled a weak single to third base in the seventh inning to account for UNC’s offense for the day.

At the plate, McGarva led the way with a pair of hits while Liddle and Graham had the only other hits.

Tech will be back in action on Wednesday, hosting in-state rival Liberty in a doubleheader starting at 5 o’clock. It will be Senior Night as Whitney Davis, Misty Hall and Amber Walker will be recognized before the game.
