CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia Tech baseball’s first win at Chapel Hill since 1976 was not going to come easy. After the Hokies broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth to take a 4-2 lead, the No. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels fought back with a two-out rally to make it a one-run game and had the bases loaded.

However, on a 3-2 pitch, Tech reliever Cole Kragel was able to get Eli Sutherland to hit a popup into foul territory behind the plate. Catcher Andrew Mogg, almost up against the backstop, was able to secure the ball into his glove and Tech held on for the 4-3 victory at Boshamer Stadium in the final game of the three-game ACC series on Sunday afternoon.

Kragel (1-1) picked up the win, the first of his collegiate career, in relief of starter Packy Naughton, who tossed 7.0 innings, allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out six batters. UNC used four pitchers and Brett Daniels suffered the loss and is now 2-1.

How the runs were scored

• North Carolina (23-9, 8-7 ACC) used a Tech error in the first to plate the game’s first run when Brian Miller, who singled and stole second, scored with two outs on an errant throw to first.
• Tech (11-22, 2-13 ACC) knotted the game in the third on an RBI single by Phil Sciretta that brought home Garrett Hudson.
• Tyler Ramirez gave the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead in the seventh on an RBI single that brought in Zack Gahagan.
• Tech tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth on sacrifice bunt off the bat of Rahiem Cooper that scored pinch runner Logan Bible.
• The Hokies were able to break the tie with two runs in the ninth. The inning started with Tech loading the bases with just one out. Mogg followed with a grounder to third, and as UNC attempted to complete a double play, the throw to first was wide and instead of just Sciretta scoring from third, Ryan Tufts, who was on second, was able to come across the plate as well.
• UNC's Ramirez hit a two-out, solo home run to make it 4-3 in the ninth, and the Tar Heels then used an error, walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases before the final out.

• Saige Jenco: career-high four walks (previous high was three done three times, last Feb 28, 2015 vs. Toledo, G1) pushing his team-lead to 30 for the season and 92 for his career; one was intentional, first of the season, third time in his career.
• Sciretta: 3 hits, 14th multi-hit game of the season, 32nd of his career; fourth game this season with at least three hits, fifth time in his career; RBI, his 50th in a Tech uniform.
• Joe Freiday, Jr.: double, fourth of the season, ninth of his career; 2 hits, fourth multi-hit game of the season, sixth of his career.
• Naughton: 7.0 innings pitched, third time this season and sixth time in his career has tossed at least 6.0 IP; six strikeouts, fifth time this season and sixth time in his career with at least six strikeouts.
