BLACKSBURG – It took a couple of tries, but the Virginia Tech baseball team finally hosted its home opener on Wednesday afternoon at English Field. However, the visiting Cougars of the College of Charleston registered the 8-3 victory in the nonconference tilt.
The College of Charleston (6-3) used a four-run third – all unearned runs – and a three-run fifth to jump out to a five-run advantage and then cruised to the victory.
Brendon Hayden actually gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a leadoff solo home run to right. It was the senior’s third long ball in the last five games and the 16th of his Tech career.
In the third, the Hokies, who now trailed 4-1, cut their deficit to a deuce in the home half of the frame when Miguel Ceballos knocked home Alex Perez with a two-out single. It was Perez’ 18th run scored of 2015.
Down 7-2 in the sixth, Andrew Mogg collected his second hit of the day, a single to go with his earlier double, and plated Sean Keselica in the process.
Perez, who started on the mound for Tech, suffered his second loss of the season. He went four frames but was saddled with the four unearned runs. The Cougars’ Nathan Helvey improved to 2-1 with the victory.
Tech now turns its attention to conference action, as the Hokies will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to open their ACC slate with a three-game series against Wake Forest. Friday’s game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
