CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – On the final day of the ACC regular season, No. 6 North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies, 6-2, Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium.

On this day, it was North Carolina starter Hobbs Johnson’s turn to flirt with perfection. A day after Joe Mantiply entered the fifth with a perfect game intact, Johnson took his perfect game into the eighth, retiring the first 22 batters he faced. Jake Atwell singled with one out in the eight to break up both the perfect game and the no-hit bid.

Meanwhile, the Tar Heels had giving him enough run support with single runs in the second and third frames – with an RBI from Cody Stubbs and Jacob Stallings – and a pair of runs in the sixth, a two-RBI double by Adam Griffin, and the seventh, a two-run homer by Tommy Coyle, to take a 6-0 lead.

In the eighth frame, Tech would add two more hits off the Tar Heel starter and score a pair of runs, with Atwell scoring on a Ronnie Shaban single and error by the center fielder. Then, Brendon Hayden brought in Shaban with another single to make it 6-2.

The Hokies did not have another comeback win in their pocket as they managed just a Chad Pinder single in the ninth off reliever R.C. Orlan. Johnson improved to 6-1 with the win and Tech starter Marc Zecchino fell to 2-5 with the loss.

As a team, North Carolina finished the regular season 42-14, 22-8 in the ACC, while Tech was 34-21, 11-19 in conference.

The regular season does end for the Hokies and they were not able to advance to the upcoming ACC Baseball Championship. They will, however, wait to see if their regular season was strong enough to earn an at-large berth in the 2012 NCAA tournament.
