ATHENS, Ohio – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Ohio 64-57 on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the 2016 WNIT at the Convocation Center in Athens, Ohio.
“I credit Ohio, we knew they are a good team and if we got off to a slow start, which we did, that it would be tough to play from behind all night,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I complemented our team, as they have all season we have never really quit. We got back into it in the third quarter and we got back into in the fourth, so I’m proud of our team for the fight they showed.”
Sidney Cook recorded her second double-double of the season dropping in 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while scooping up three steals for the Hokies. Hannah Young added 11 points while Regan Magarity had nine points and nine boards. Chanette Hicks handed out five assists.
The Hokies got off to a slow start as Ohio took 16-4 lead with 3:38 to go in the opening quarter. Tech was able to cut it to an eight-point game several times over the next minutes and trailed by as many with 6:07 remaining in the second frame. The Bobcats answered with an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 33-17 with 1:14 to go. A layup from Hicks followed by a 3-pointer from Young helped Tech cut it to an 11-point, 33-22 game heading into the break.
Ohio extended its lead back to 16 coming out of the break, but the Hokies chipped away at it and cut down to 42-38 off a layup from Hicks with 2:58 to go in the third. The Bobcats answered with a 13-0 run that extended into the next quarter to go on top 55-38 with 7:00 to go.
Tech didn’t back down and went on a 12-4 run to get the game back into single digits, trailing 59-50 with just under two minutes remaining. Ohio pushed the lead back to 12, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Cook followed by a free throw pulled the Hokies within five (62-57) with 15 seconds on the clock. The Hokies were unable to connect in the final seconds as the Bobcats sank two final charity shots to get the win.
The Hokies held a slight 40-38 lead on the boards, but the Bobcats forced 17 turnovers while just giving the ball up 11 times. Tech connected on 34.6 percent from the field and tallied seven 3-pointers. Ohio was 38.1 percent from the field, connecting on five from outside. The Hokies also held the advantage on the free throw line, hitting 14-of-20 to Ohio’s 11-of-14.
Hicks finishes the season with the freshman record and single-season record for steals with 91 as well as the freshman class record in assists with 134. Young wraps up her senior campaign with the senior season record for 3-pointers made with 74. She finishes her career fifth on the all-time 3-pointers made list with 139.
Virginia Tech wraps up the season with an 18-14 record, marking Tech’s best finish since 2006-07. That season is also the last time the Hokies appeared in the postseason until this year.
