GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team dropped its game against Boston College in the opening round of the 2016 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, 48-37 on Wednesday night.
The 11th-seeded Hokies struggled offensively as they shot just 13-of-59 (22.0 percent) from the field for the game. Defensively, they forced 23 Boston College turnovers and had an 18-7 advantage in points off turnovers but were unable to overcome a narrow second half deficit.
“I want to credit BC,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “It was a hard fought game and they had a good game plan. Certainly they made us struggle on offense. I think with every missed shot we started to press a little more and got everybody a little bit tight. The team still put a lot of effort into it and I’m proud of the effort, but we're not going to win many games shooting the way we shot in this game.”
Chanette Hicks had 11 points, five steals and four rebounds to lead the Hokies. Regan Magarity had seven rebounds to go along with four points. Sidney Cook tallied seven points, six rebounds and Taijah Campbell added four points and four rebounds.
After the Eagles went up early 4-0, Tech responded with a 5-0 run with a jumper from Hannah Young and a 3-pointer from Cook to make it 5-4. Tech eventually led 9-6 but the Eagles made four free throws to go up 12-11.
Boston College shot 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) in the first half from the floor and had a 23-10 rebounding edge over the Hokies.
Tech shot 8-of-29 (27.6 percent) from the field in the first half, but only trailed 25-22 at halftime as the Hokies forced 12 Boston College turnovers and outscored the Eagles 7-2 in fast break points. Tech turned the ball over just three times in the first half. The first half had six lead changes.
After Hicks opened the scoring in the second half to pull the Hokies with 25-24, the Eagles went on a 9-2 run to build their biggest lead of the game at 34-26 with 6:22 left in the third quarter. Boston College led 39-30 at the end of the quarter. That was as close as Tech got as the Hokies were outscored 10-7 in the final stanza.
The Hokies now have a record of 17-13 while Boston College advances to the second round with a season record of 15-15.
Tech is eligible for postseason competition and await possible selection at the conclusion of conference tournaments.
