GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech will be seeded 11th and is set to face 14th-seeded Boston College on Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. as the Greensboro Coliseum plays host to the 39th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament this Wednesday through Sunday.
The Hokies enter the tournament 17-12 overall and 5-11 in the ACC, marking their best record since finishing 2006-07 with records of 19-15, 6-8 ACC. Tech will face Boston College in the opening round with the Eagles holding a 14-15 record overall and 2-14 in the league. Virginia Tech defeated the Eagles, 58-33 earlier this season. Hannah Young led the Hokies with 13 points while Chanette Hicks and Vanessa Panousis tallied 11 and 10, respectively.
The tournament will feature all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Top-seeded Notre Dame (28-1 overall, 16-0 ACC), second-seeded Louisville (24-6, 15-1), third-seeded Syracuse (23-6, 13-3), and fourth-seeded Florida State (23-6, 13-3) will receive byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round.
Tournament play begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with No. 12 seed Pitt (12-17, 4-12) facing No. 13 North Carolina (14-17, 4-12). Wednesday’s second game will find No. 10 Wake Forest (6-10, 15-14) facing No. 15 Clemson (4-25, 0-16) at 3:30 p.m.
The second round opens Thursday at 11 a.m., when No. 5 seed Miami (22-7, 10-6) faces the winner of Wednesday’s first game. No. 8 Duke (19-11, 8-8) will face No. 9 Virginia (16-14, 6-10) at 2 p.m. The third game of Thursday’s session finds No. 7 Georgia Tech (18-11, 8-8) taking on the winner of Wednesday’s second game at 6 p.m. The second round concludes on Thursday at 8 p.m., with No. 6 NC State (19-10, 10-6) meeting the winner of Wednesday evening’s final contest.
No. 4 Florida State begins action on Friday at 11 a.m., when it faces the winner of Thursday’s first game. No. 1 Notre Dame opens tournament play at 2 p.m., when it faces Thursday’s second-game winner. The evening session begins at 6 p.m., with No. 2 Louisville facing the winner of Thursday’s third game. No. 3 Syracuse closes out Friday’s quarterfinal session, facing the winner of the Thursday session’s finale.
The winners of Friday’s first two games will meet in Saturday’s noon semifinal game, while the winners of the Friday evening session will meet Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The championship game of the 2016 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
All 14 games of this year’s tournament will be televised. The first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be carried by the league’s regional sports networks. Both Saturday semifinal games will be carried nationally by ESPNU, while a national audience will also watch Sunday’s championship game via ESPN. In addition, all games will be available via ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
Greensboro Coliseum will play host to the ACC Women’s Tournament for the 17th consecutive year. This year’s tournament features five teams ranked among the nation’s top 25 in the latest Associated Press poll with Notre Dame at No. 2, followed by No. 10 Louisville, No. 12 Florida State, No. 17 Miami and No. 18 Syracuse.
