CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team found itself in another battle on Sunday afternoon as the Hokies forced No. 18/17 Miami into overtime before the Hurricanes held on to win 67-56 at the BankUnited Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

Sidney Cook led the Hokies (15-12, 3-11 ACC) with 17 points, going 14-of-15 from the line while pulling down nine rebounds and grabbing three steals. Hannah Young added 15 points while Chanette Hicks tallied nine points, four assists and three steals to set the new Virginia Tech ACC single-season record for steals. Taijah Campbell pulled down 12 rebounds, recorded six points and four blocks.

“I’m really proud of the effort the team put forth. We can’t play any harder than we’re playing, we just have to be more efficient on offense,” head coach Dennis Wolff said.

The Hokies came out of the gate firing, shooting 53.8 percent from the field in the opening quarter. Tech and Miami traded baskets early, but the Hokies used a 9-2 run to push their lead to 18-9 off a jumper from Young with 1:35 to go in the frame. Tech took an 18-11 advantage into the second.

Miami scored the first basket of the second quarter to cut the Hokies lead to five, but Tech responded with four straight points to push back ahead by nine. The Hurricanes went to work over the final six minutes of the period, outscoring the Hokies 14-2 to go into halftime on top 27-24.

The Hurricanes extended their lead to eight in the third frame and were up 36-28 with 3:23 to go. Tech kept it close and went on a 7-2 run to close the quarter, cutting the Miami lead to three (38-35) heading into the final 10 minutes.

Miami again extended its lead, going up eight early in the fourth, but the Hokies chipped away by outscoring the ‘Canes 9-4 to close the Miami lead to one at 49-48 with 31 seconds left. The Hurricanes’ Erykah Davenport stepped to the line hitting one of two to put Miami up 50-48 with 10 seconds remaining. Hicks took the ensuing possession, drove it down the lane for the Hokies and connected on a falling down jumper to send the game into overtime.

The Hokies took an early three-point 55-52 advantage in the extra frame, but Miami used a 13-0 run that included going 10-of-16 from the line to retake the lead. Tech was unable to get a run going on the offensive side as Miami held on for the win.

Emese Hof led Miami with 15 points and seven rebounds. Michelle Woods added nine points and Jessica Thomas had seven.

The Hokies will be back on the court Thursday, Feb. 25 when they travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on Wake Forest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at LJVM Coliseum.
