THE HOKIES (15-11, 3-10 ACC)
Virginia Tech dropped a close one to Duke 66-62 the last time out. Sidney Cook led the Hokies with 20 points. Hannah Young chipped in 15 points while Vanessa Panousis tallied 11. Taijah Campbell tallied eight points and six rebounds while Chanette Hicks had seven assists and four steals.
Tech led 31-27 coming out of the break, but the Blue Devils outscored the Hokies 22-15 in the third frame. Duke took a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but a 3-pointer from Cook followed by a jumper from Young tied the game at 53-53 with 5:56 on the clock. Duke scored the next four, but the Hokies kept it close and cut it to 59-58 as Young connected from outside the arc with just over four minutes remaining. Duke moved back in front by three, but back-to-back baskets from Cook gave the Hokies a 62-61 lead with 1:54 to go. Tech was unable to connect in the final minutes as Duke closed out the game with a 5-0 run, securing the win.
Young leads the Hokies, averaging 10.3 points per game while shooting a 39.9 percent clip from outside and pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game. Cook is posting 10.0 ppg overall and leads Tech in ACC play with 11.3 ppg. Panousis is tallying 9.5 ppg and handing out 2.2 apg. Hicks is chipping in 8.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.3 apg and 2.8 spg. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 5.6 rpg while Campbell has 5.0 rpg.
THE HURRICANES (21-5, 9-4 ACC)
Miami had a bye during the week, but fell on the road to then-No. 3 Notre Dame last Sunday, 90-69. Jessica Thomas and Emese Hof tallied 12 points each while Hof also grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Thomas dished out a team-best five assists.
Notre Dame connected on 61.5 percent from the field in the opening half, outscoring the ‘Canes 44-25 in the first half. The Irish used a 28-15 advantage in the third frame to push its lead to 72-40. Miami held the advantage in the final 10 minutes, outscoring Notre Dame 29-18.
Adrienne Motley leads Miami with 16.0 points per game. Thomas is adding 11.8 ppg and handing out 3.6 apg. Keyona Hayes is tallying 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
THE SERIES
Miami holds the 15-6 lead in the all-time series and had a 57-45 win earlier this season in Blacksburg.
The Hurricanes held a 36-23 lead at the break and extended its advantage to 17 with a pair of baskets early in the third. The Hokies went to work, going on a 17-0 run that spanned 4:54 to tie it up at 40-40
with 8:12 to go. Miami answered with a 10-1 run to push the lead back to seven. The Hokies were unable to get a run going in the final minutes as the Hurricanes hit six from the line in the final minute to help secure the win.
Magarity led the Hokies with 11 points. Panousis and Cook had eight points each while Young grabbed nine boards. Motley tallied 17 points for the ‘Canes and Thomas added 14. Hayes had seven points and seven rebounds.
Up Next: Virginia Tech travels to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to face Wake Forest on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in LJVM.
