BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Pittsburgh on Sunday afternoon 59-48 in Cassell Coliseum.
The Hokies trailed just 51-48 with 3:40 remaining in the game after a Sidney Cook jumper but Pittsburgh was able to extend their lead on an Asyia Bugg jumper to make it 53-48. Tech would intentionally foul but the Panthers made six crucial free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.
“Obviously it was a very bad game on our part,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “You have to credit Pitt. I wasn’t happy at halftime, I thought we left a lot of points out there and weren’t especially sharp when we had opportunities in the first half. Then the second half was just a disaster. They out-toughed us, out-coached us, out-everythinged [sic] us and deserved to win.”
With the loss Tech is now 15-10 overall and 3-9 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Pittsburgh moves to 11-14 overall after the win and 3-9 in the ACC.
Cook had a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds for the Hokies. Hannah Young scored 11 points and added four rebounds. Rachel Camp added seven points.
With the Hokies leading 17-15 and 3:54 left in the second quarter, Tech made four free throws and a got a jumper from Young as part of a 6-0 run to take a 23-15 lead. The two teams traded baskets with the Hokies taking a 27-20 lead going into halftime.
The Panthers went on a 6-0 run to start the second half and tied the game 30-30 with 6:28 left in the third quarter. The Panthers eventually outscored the Hokies 21-10 to take a 41-37 advantage at the end of the third.
The Hokies shot 28.3 percent from the field and 7.1 percent from 3-point range. Tech only turned the ball over nine times during the game while forcing 14 Panthers turnovers.
Hokies defense limited Pittsburgh to shooting just 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from the field in the first half ut the Panthers went 11-of-22 (50.0 percent) in the second half.
The Hokies will return home as they host Duke at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.
