CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After trailing by 17 at the end of the third quarter, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team cut it to a one-point game with 1:01 to go in the fourth, but North Carolina held on to secure the win 71-67 on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena.
Virginia Tech (15-9, 3-8 ACC) held UNC (14-12, 4-7 ACC) to just one field goal in the final quarter, but the Tar Heels went 9-of-10 from the line to help hold off the Hokies.
“Really proud of the team,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “It wasn’t our best night, but they showed a lot of heart and a lot of fight. We put ourselves in a position with a chance to win the game and that is really all you can ask for in a situation like this one today.”
Hannah Young led the Hokies with 22 points and eight rebounds. Vanessa Panousis added 14 points while Chanette Hicks tallied eight points, six assists and four steals. Regan Magarity also grabbed eight boards and chipped in seven points.
With four 3-pointers tonight, Panousis has made the most 3-pointers in ACC play in Tech history. She surpasses Lindsey Biggs who tallied 84, 2006-10. In addition, Panousis moves into second place on the career record list with 189 again surpassing Biggs who posted 188 in her career.
The Hokies came out slow in the opening quarter, shooting just 20 percent from the field as the Tar Heels connected on 61.5 percent to go on top 23-10 after the first 10 minutes. Tech shot a little better in the second frame, but UNC continued to hold the offensive advantage and went into the break on top 38-21.
Coming out of the intermission, the Tar Heels pushed their lead to 19, but the Hokies answered with a pair of 3-pointers from Young and Panousis. UNC led by 15, 46-31, with 7:26 to go in the frame before Tech scored nine unanswered to cut it to a six-point game with 4:51 on the clock. The Tar Heels closed the third quarter with a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 60-43.
Tech came out firing in the fourth, outscoring the Tar Heels 18-4 over a nine-minute span to cut the UNC lead to 64-63 at the one minute mark. UNC drained a pair from the line, but Tech answered on the other end with two charity shots by Young. The Hokies were again within one with 10 seconds to play following a jumper from Young, but UNC drained three free throws in the final seconds to help secure the win.
The Hokies shot 36.8 percent from the field in the game (26-68) and was 9-of-23 from outside the arc. Tech went 8-of-12 from the line. North Carolina connected on 41.5 (22-53) from the field and 7-of-22 from long range. The Tar Heels were 20-of-22 from the charity stripe.
Tech forced 18 UNC turnovers while only giving the ball up 11 times while UNC held a 40-35 advantage on the boards.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Feb. 14 when Tech hosts Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
