THE HOKIES (15-8, 3-7 ACC)
Virginia Tech downed rival Virginia 66-46 the last time out, marking the first time since 2007 that the Hokies have defeated the Cavaliers. Sidney Cook led the Hokies with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Hannah Young added 16 points while Chanette Hicks tallied 11 points and a career-high eight assists. Taijah Campbell grabbed 10 rebounds, including six in the fourth quarter.
The Hokies came out strong with UVA getting it down to a one-point game early in the second quarter. Tech pushed its lead back to seven, but the Cavaliers went on a 6-2 run to close out the half, cutting the Hokies lead to 28-26 at the break. UVA tied it coming out of the intermission, but Tech answered putting together a 17-4 run in the third to push the lead to 13 (45-32). The Cavaliers cut it to a five-point game to start the fourth, but the final frame was all Hokies as Tech outscored UVA 21-8 to secure the win.
Young and Vanessa Panousis lead the Hokies, averaging 9.6 points per game. Young is shooting a 42.5 percent clip from outside while pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game, and Panousis is handing out 2.22 apg. Cook is posting 9.5 ppg and 5.4 rpg, while Hicks is chipping in 8.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.1 apg and 2.8 spg. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 5.5 rpg and chipping in 8.1 ppg.
THE TAR HEELS (13-12, 3-7 ACC)
North Carolina rallied past Boston College 86-78 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Sunday afternoon. All five starters got in double-digits for the Tar Heels who were led by Hillary Summers with 23 points and nine rebounds. Jamie Cherry added 21 points and N’Dea Bryan tallied 16 points. Destinee Walker and Stephanie Watts tallied 12 points each.
UNC trailed the Eagles 42-36 at the break and was down most of the third quarter before tying it up 55-55 with just under three minutes to go in the frame. BC pushed its lead back to four (62-58) heading into the final quarter. The Tar Heels used a strong fourth period to claim the lead and ultimately win, outscoring the Eagles 28-16 in the final 10 minutes.
Cherry leads the Tar Heels, averaging 14.4 points per game. Watts and Walker are adding 13.4 ppg while Watts is also grabbing 6.8 rpg. Summers is tallying 10.2 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg.
THE SERIES
This marks the 22nd meeting between the two teams, with UNC holding a 17-4 advantage in the series. The Tar Heels won last season’s meeting 74-52, but the Hokies claimed the win the last time the two teams met in Chapel Hill, 50-47. It was the first program win for the Hokies in Chapel Hill.
In last season’s game Samantha Hill led the Hokies with 11 points while Taijah Campbell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Cherry is the top returner for the Tar Heels from the game, having posted 11 points.
Panousis knocked down 24 points to lead Tech to the win in Chapel Hill. Xylina McDaniel, who has been sidelined by injury this season, led UNC with 13 points.
