CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Sidney Cook tallied 23 points, 14 rebounds to lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team over in-state rival Virginia, 66-46 on Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The win snapped UVA’s 18-game series win streak and improved the Hokies to 15-8 on the season and 3-7 in ACC play. Virginia falls to 13-11 and 3-7 in the league.
Cook’s 23 points and 14 rebounds marks one of the best performances in the Hokies’ history with UVA. Former Tech players Uju Ugoka and Tere Williams had 21 points, 10 rebounds in 2014 and 1998, respectively.
Hannah Young added 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Chanette Hicks added 11 points while handing out a career-high eight assists. Taijah Campbell pulled down 10 rebounds.
“I’m extremely happy for the team,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “We have been in a tough stretch and unable to score here lately. Sidney got us into a good flow right away on the offensive side. I think Chanette Hicks’ impact on the game was every bit as dramatic as Sidney’s. It was a good win for us.”
The Hokies opened the game strong with a 7-4 run. The two teams traded baskets over the rest of the opening quarter as Tech led 18-15 after the first 10 minutes behind 10 points from Cook. Virginia cut it to one early in the second frame, but the Hokies answered with four straight to push the lead back to five. The Hokies took their largest lead of the first half, going up 27-20 off a layup from Dominique Powell with 2:24 on the clock. Virginia Tech led 28-26 lead at the break.
Coming out of the intermission, UVA connected on a pair of free throws to tie it up at 28-28. Tech countered with a 17-4 run that spanned the next seven minutes to go on top 45-32 off a Campbell layup with 2:25 to go in the third quarter. Virginia put together a run of its own to cut the Tech lead to 45-40 in the opening minute of the fourth.
Virginia Tech went to work in the final frame, outscoring UVA 21-8 in the last 10 minutes, including a 12-of-13 clip from the free throw line. The Hokies also used strong rebounding in the fourth, out rebounding the Cavaliers 15-4 as Campbell grabbed six of her 10 boards in the final frame.
The Hokies shot 42.6 percent (22-of-47) from the field and went 22-of-26 from the line. Virginia connected on 28.6 percent from the field and was 13-of-16 from the line. Tech held the 42-29 advantage on the boards.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court Thursday, Feb. 11 when the Hokies travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina for a 7 p.m. game against UNC.
