BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Georgia Tech on Thursday night in Cassell Coliseum, 51-34.
The Hokies are now 14-7 overall and 2-6 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Georgia Tech improves to 14-9 overall with the win and 4-6 in the ACC.
Sidney Cook had a team-high nine points and four rebounds. Vanessa Panousis had eight points while Regan Magarity had four points and six rebounds. Taijah Campbell grabbed a team best nine boards.
“Obviously it was a really bad offensive performance for us tonight,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “I thought the team worked extremely hard defensively. It was a hard-fought defensive battle, but we’re not in a good way offensively right now. We have to try and figure it out.”
Georgia Tech jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but a jumper by Dominique Powell and a 3-pointer from Panousis allowed the Hokies to cut the lead to 10-7 at the end of the first quarter. Tech started the second quarter on a Magarity layup to get the Hokies within a point. The Yellow Jackets answered with back-to-back layups.
The Hokies took their first lead of the game after Panousis knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 17-16 with 2:44 to go in the second frame. The Yellow Jackets scored two straight baskets before Hannah Young made a 3-pointer to tie the game with just 44 seconds left prior to halftime. The two teams went into the break knotted at 20.
Georgia Tech opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take a 33-24 lead with 4:26 left in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets ultimately outscored the Hokies 16-6 in the quarter to take control of the game. Virginia Tech cut it to an eight point game off a jumper from Young with 8:39 to go, but that is as close as the Hokies would get the rest of the way.
Georgia Tech held a slight edge in rebounding at 36-32 and turned the ball over three fewer times, 15 to the Hokies’ 18. The Yellow Jackets capitalized on the Hokies miscues, scoring 21 points off of turnovers.
Virginia Tech struggled on the offensive side, hitting just 25.5 percent from the field while going 4-of-19 from outside the arc.
Katarina Vuckovic led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points while Aaliyah Whiteside tallied 13.
The Hokies will travel to Charlottesville for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 7.
