THE HOKIES (14-7, 2-6 ACC)
Virginia Tech dropped a 68-50 decision to No. 11/11 Florida State the last time out. Chanette Hicks led the Hokies with 10 points, six assists, five steals and four rebounds.
Despite losing the game, the Hokies had several monumental moments, including Hicks setting a new Virginia Tech freshman record for steals. She broke the old record of 57 set by Ieva Kublina (2000-01) and Sonya Dalton (1979-80). In addition, Vanessa Panousis drained a 3-pointer in the third quarter to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She becomes the 24th player in Hokies history to reach the mark and just the ninth to do so as a junior.
Panousis leads the Hokies with 10.1 points per game along with handing out 2.3 assists per game. Hannah Young is adding 9.5 ppg and shooting a 43.3 percent clip from outside while pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game. Sidney Cook is posting 8.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg, while Hicks is adding 8.6 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 4.0 apg and 2.95 spg. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 5.4 rpg and chipping in 8.4 ppg.
THE YELLOW JACKETS (13-9, 3-6 ACC)
Georgia Tech picked up a 62-56 win over Boston College at home on Sunday afternoon. Katerina Vuckovic came off the bench to lead the Yellow Jackets with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Aaliyah Whiteside added 17 points.
The Yellow Jackets trailed at the break as the Eagles were up 29-28 heading into the second half. Georgia Tech used a strong third quarter to pull ahead a take a 47-44 advantage into the final 10 minutes. Boston College closed the lead to one coming out of the quarter-break, but that is as close as the Eagles would get as Georgia Tech stayed in front during the final frame.
Whiteside leads the Yellow Jackets with 21.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Roddreka Rogers is adding 10.5 points and 6.7 boards per game. Vuckovic is chipping in 7.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg.
THE SERIES
This marks the 14th meeting between the Hokies and Yellow Jackets with Georgia Tech holding an 8-5 lead in the series. Georgia Tech held off the Hokies to win the game last season after Virginia Tech came back to tie it at 52-52 just shy of the midway point of the second half. The Hokies were unable to overcome as Georgia Tech held on for the 79-71 win.
Cook led the Hokies with 25 points and 12 rebounds while Panousis dropped in 18 points. Whiteside had 19 points to lead the Yellow Jackets and Antonia Peresson added 17. Zaire O’Neil chipped in 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
