THE HOKIES (14-6, 2-5 ACC)
Virginia Tech dropped a 57-45 decision to No. 17/17 Miami the last time out. Regan Magarity led the Hokies with 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. Vanessa Panousis and Sidney Cook each had eight points and four rebounds. Hannah Young led on the boards with nine rebounds while Chanette Hicks tallied five points, three assists and three steals.
Miami held a 36-23 lead at the break and extended its advantage to 17 with a pair of baskets coming out of the break. The Hokies went to work, going on a 17-0 run that spanned 4:54 to tie it up at 40-40 with 8:12 to go. Miami answered with a 10-1 run to push the lead back to seven. The Hokies were unable to get a run going in the final minutes as the Hurricanes hit six from the line in the final minute to help secure the win.
Panousis leads the Hokies with 10.5 points per game along with handing out 2.4 assists per game. Young is adding 10.0 ppg and shooting 39.6 percent from the field, including a 43.3 percent clip from outside while pulling down 4.9 rebounds per game. Cook is posting 8.8 ppg and 5.1 rpg, and Hicks is adding 8.5 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.9 apg and 2.85 spg. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 5.7 rpg and chipping in 8.3 ppg.
THE SEMINOLES (17-4, 7-1 ACC)
Florida State defeated Wake Forest 96-55 on the road Thursday night. Brittany Brown tallied 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds to lead the Seminoles. Shakayla Thomas tallied 16 points while Maria Conde and Ivey Slaughter each tallied 15 points. Slaughter also scooped up six steals.
Florida State jumped out to the early lead after outscoring the Demon Deacons 27-9 in the opening quarter. Wake Forest held the advantage in the second frame 24-21, but FSU took the 48-33 lead in to the break. The Seminoles again jumped out coming out of the break, outscoring Wake 48-22 in the second half.
Thomas leads the Seminoles with 17.3 ppg. Adut Bulgak is adding 13.7 ppg and grabbing 7.6 rpg. Leticia Romero is knocking in 10.3 ppg while Brown is notching 10.3 ppg and handing out 4.9 apg.
THE SERIES
This marks the 35th meeting in one of the Hokies’ longest series. The Seminoles won last season in the quarterfinal round of the 2015 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, defeating Tech 82-43 in the Greensboro, Coliseum. Panousis and Rachel Camp each had nine points for the Hokies. Thomas led the Seminoles with 17 while Romero tallied 11.
