BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team rallied from a 17-point deficit in the third quarter but ultimately fell to No. 17/17 Miami on Thursday night in Cassell Coliseum, 57-45.
Tech was down 40-23 with 4:31 remaining in third quarter but staged a furious comeback to tie the game at 40-40 in the fourth quarter with 8:12 remaining. The tie was a result of a 17-0 run that spanned 4:54 and carried from the third to the fourth quarter.
A couple of costly turnovers by the Hokies gave Miami the opportunity to reclaim the lead with a 10-1 run to go on top 50-41 with just 2:47 left in the fourth quarter. The Hokies were unable to recover in the final minutes as the Hurricanes held on for the win.
“I thought the team showed a lot of heart to get back into the game,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “We really looked like we were dead in the water and the team showed a lot of effort. We just needed to be a little smarter and a little more efficient when we got back in it.”
Regan Magarity was had a team-high 11 points and grabbed five rebounds while Vanessa Panousis had eight points and four rebounds. Sidney Cook also added eight points and four rebounds for Tech. Hannah Young led on the boards with nine and Chanette Hicks had five points, three assists and three steals.
Tech shot just 28.1 percent from the field and just 19 percent from 3-point range while Miami shot 36.2 percent from the field and held a 44-35 advantage in rebounds. Miami also went 10-of-12 from the free throw line while Tech was 9-of-17.
The Hokies jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game thanks to a Dominique Powell layup and a Magarity 3-pointer. The teams traded baskets as Tech held a 12-9 lead with 2:03 left in the first quarter. Miami was able to get into a rhythm and ended the period on an 8-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The run continued into the second quarter as Miami scored five of the first six points in the frame to increase their lead to 22-14. A Young 3-pointer from the wing was able to end the run. Tech stayed within single digits until a 7-0 run by the Hurricanes to end the half allowed them to take a 36-23 lead into the locker room.
The Hokies will hit the road to face No. 11/11 Florida State at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Tallahassee, Florida.
