NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to No. 3/3 Notre Dame, 80-41 on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Purcell Pavilion in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Virginia Tech falls to 14-5 overall and 2-4 in the ACC while Notre Dame improves to 19-1 and 7-0 in the league.
Sidney Cook led the Hokies with a season-high 21 points while grabbing nine rebounds for game-highs in both categories. Vanessa Panousis chipped in 10 points for the Hokies.
“Obviously a tough afternoon for us,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “They are one of the best teams in the country. In order for us to hang in the game against a team like that, we need to be way more efficient on the offensive end and way more locked in on how to guard them. They create problems because they have a terrific post player, great point guard and two wing shooters. Credit them, I didn’t think we were quite aggressive enough with the exception of Sidney. I thought everyone else played back on their heels.”
Notre Dame shot 52.7 percent from the field from the field while the Hokies were 15-of-55 for 27.3 percent. Tech connected on five from outside the arc while the Irish hit four. Notre Dame held a big advantage from the free throw line, going 18-of-23 while Tech was 6-of-7.
The Irish also held a 44-25 advantage on the boards, but only tallied seven second-chance points. ND forced 18 turnovers for 16 points while Tech forced 14 turnovers and connected for 10 points.
In the opening quarter, the Hokies and Irish kept it close and were tied early. Notre Dame used a 9-0 run to go on top 11-5, but Cook drained a jumper as time ran out to cut the Irish lead to four heading into the second frame.
Notre Dame took control of the second quarter, opening with a 10-0 run that was halted by a jumper from Hannah Young as the Irish took a 21-9 lead. Cook scored a pair of free throws in the frame, with Notre Dame on top 25-11 with 1:33 to go. The Irish closed out the half outscoring Tech 6-0 to take a 31-11 lead into the break.
Virginia Tech was unable to get a run going after the break as Notre Dame responded to every Tech basket. The Irish took its largest lead of the game late in the fourth quarter.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Thursday, Jan. 28 when they host Miami. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
