THE HOKIES (14-4, 2-3 ACC)
Virginia Tech faltered against NC State, falling 72-61 on Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum. Hannah Young led the Hokies with 14 points on 5-of-10 from the field. Vanessa Panousis added nine points while Rachel Camp also tallied nine. Chanette Hicks dropped in eight points, had five rebounds, five assists and a steal.
After a close first half of play, the Hokies led 36-34 at the break. Tech struggled on the offensive side after halftime as the Wolfpack outscored the Hokies 22-9 in the third quarter to go on top 56-45 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Hokies were unable to get a run going in the final 10 minutes, getting no closer than eight as the two teams traded baskets in the final frame.
Panousis and Young lead the Hokies with 10.6 points per game. Young is shooting 42.4 percent from the field, including a 45.9 percent clip from outside while pulling down 4.7 rebounds per game. Panousis is also handing out 2.22 assists per game. Hicks is adding 9.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 4.0 apg and 2.8 spg. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 5.7 rpg.
THE FIGHTING IRISH (18-1, 6-0 ACC)
Notre Dame defeated Syracuse 90-62 on Thursday. Michaela Mabrey led the Irish with 20 points while Brianna Turner was just behind with 19. Arike Ogunbowale tallied 14 points and Madison Cable posted 13. Kathryn Westbeld pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Irish used a strong first half to pull away from the Orange early as Notre Dame led 28-11 after the opening quarter. ND continued to roll through the second quarter, pushing the lead to 57-29 at the break. The offense was more even in the second half, but the Irish rolled to the win.
Cable leads the Irish with 14.4 ppg. Turner is adding 13.7 ppg and grabbing 6.8 rpg. Mabrey is chipping in 12.6 ppg and Ogunbowale is adding 11.5 ppg. Lindsay Allen is averaging 5.4 apg.
THE SERIES
This marks just the ninth meeting between the two teams with Notre Dame leading the series 7-1. The Irish, ranked fourth at the time, won last season’s meeting 74-50 in Blacksburg. Young led the Hokies with 13 points. Samantha Hill came off the bench to chip in nine points. The Irish was led by Westbeld, who dropped in 17 points of the bench.
