BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to visiting North Carolina State, 72-61, on Thursday night at Cassell Coliseum.
“I credit NC State,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “I think their offensive toughness was better than our defensive toughness, so I think that was the story of the game. Midway through the second period and into the third period we got ourselves into a hole we had trouble getting out of.”
With the loss, the Hokies are now 14-4 overall and 2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Wolfpack improve to 14-6 and 5-2 in the ACC. It marked the first loss at home this season for Tech who was 12-0 coming into the game.
Hannah Young finished with a team-high 14 points while Chanette Hicks had eight points, five assists and five rebounds. Sidney Cook had eight points and five rebounds.
The Hokies came out slow at the beginning of the second half as NC State shot 60.0-percent in the quarter take the lead at the 7:01 mark. The Wolfpack ultimately outscored the Hokies in the frame 22-9 putting Tech down 56-45 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Tech was unable to get a run going in the final frame and only got as close as eight as the teams traded baskets with both scoring 16 points in the final minutes.
In the opening half, the Hokies led 31-21 at the 4:56 mark in the second quarter before the Wolfpack cut the lead to 31-29 after and 8-0 run. Tech got to the free throw line a couple of times to help push the advantage to 36-29 but two baskets in the last 41 seconds of the half made the deficit just 36-34 at the break.
The Hokies shot 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from the field in the first half while NC State was 12-of-30 (40.0 percent). The Hokies had 11 assists in the half and held a slight 17-14 advantage in rebounds.
Tech finished shooting 24-of-49 (49.0 percent) for the contest but allowed NC State to go 27-of-57 (47.4 percent).
Virginia Tech will be back in action on Sunday as the Hokies travel to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish at 1 p.m.
