THE HOKIES (14-3, 2-2 ACC)
Virginia Tech downed Clemson 79-49 on Monday night at Cassell Coliseum. Vanessa Panousis dropped in 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-5 from outside the arc. Regan Magarity added 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Rachel Camp came off the bench for 11 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. Sidney Cook added nine points while Chanette Hicks had eight points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The Hokies trailed 10-8 after the opening quarter, but Tech went to work in the second, outscoring the Tigers 23-5 in the frame to take a 31-15 lead into the break. The Hokies continued their momentum into the third as Hannah Young opened the quarter with a 3-pointer. The teams traded baskets early in the third, but the Hokies closed out with a 13-2 run to go into the final 10 minutes with a 59-30 advantage. The scoring was more even in the final quarter with the Hokies holding a 20-19 advantage as they rolled to the win.
Panousis leads the Hokies with 10.7 points while handing out 2.7 assists per game. Young is adding 10.4 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 46.1 percent from outside the arc. Hicks is chipping in 9.2 ppg, tallying 2.9 steals and 3.9 assists per game. Magarity leads on the boards with 6.1 rpg while notching 8.4 ppg.
THE WOLFPACK (13-6, 4-2 ACC)
NC State fell to No. 23/22 Louisville 92-90 on Sunday in Raleigh. Dominique Wilson led the Wolfpack with 31 points. Jennifer Mathurin added 19 points and a team-best seven rebounds while Miah Spencer tallied 14 points. Ashley Williams dished out six assists.
The Wolfpack led 50-36 at the break, but Louisville used a strong third quarter, outscoring NC State 21-14 in the frame to cut it to 64-57 heading in the last 10 minutes. NC State maintained its advantage and was up 90-85 heading into the final 25 seconds. Louisiville hit a quick 3-pointer and forced a turnover that resulted in a foul on the Wolfpack where the Cardinals sank the game deciding baskets.
Wilson leads the Wolfpack with 15.5 ppg. Spencer is adding 12.6 ppg and 5.2 apg. Mathurin is notching 12.0 ppg and pulling down a team leading 6.7 rpg.
In addition to Louisville, the Hokies and Wolfpack both played Radford in the non-conference. Tech defeated the Highlanders 47-40 while NC State had a 67-52 decision.
THE SERIES
This marks the 17th meeting between the two teams with NC State leading the series 15-1. The Hokies picked up the program’s first win over the Wolfpack last season at the ACC Tournament as Young’s buzzer beater secured the 57-56 victory.
Panousis led the Hokies with 19 points while Cook tallied 12. Spencer notched 19 points for the Wolfpack.
Up Next: Virginia Tech will go back on the road, traveling to No. 3/3 Notre Dame on Sunday, Jan. 24 for a 1 p.m. game.
