RV/RV THE HOKIES (13-2, 1-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech fell to Louisville 56-45 in the Hokies’ first ACC road game of the season. Hannah Young led Tech with 16 points. Vanessa Panousis added nine points while Chanette Hicks tallied six points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Taijah Campbell also grabbed eight board while chipping in six points.
After the first quarter of play, the Hokies and Cardinals were knotted at 13-13, but Louisville used a strong second quarter where the Hokies struggled offensively to take a 31-18 lead into the break. The Hokies came out strong in the third frame, outscoring Louisville 13-5 cutting it to a five-point game heading into the final 10 minutes. Campbell connected on a layup to open the fourth go get it within three, but Louisville answered with an 8-0 run to push ahead. A 3-pointer from Young on the next possession made it an eight point game, but that is as close as the Hokies as Louisville went 6-of-8 in the final minutes to help secure the win.
Young leads the Hokies on the season, averaging 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Panousis is adding 10.9 points and 2.9 assists. Hicks is chipping in 9.3 ppg, tallying 3.0 steals and 3.9 assists per game. Regan Magarity leads on the boards with 6.1 rpg and chipping in 7.9 ppg.
RV/25 THE ORANGE (11-4/1-1 ACC)
Syracuse dropped a close one at North Carolina, falling to the Tar Heels 77-73 the last time out. Alexis Peterson led the Orange with 22 points and six assists. Brianna Butler added 19 points, including five from outside the arc. Briana Day tallied 13 points and eight boards. Brittney Sykes grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and tossed in nine points.
The Orange led 39-33 at the break despite the Tar Heels shooting 41.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Syracuse held the lead thanks in part to six 3-pointers before the half. The two teams were even in the third with Syracuse maintaining a six point lead. UNC went on a run in the fourth to take its first lead and did not trail again in the final three minutes.
Peterson leads the Orange with 14.9 ppg, 5.5 apg and 2.9 spg. Butler is adding 13.7 ppg while Day is tallying 10.9 ppg and 7.8 rpg.
The Hokies and Orange faced several similar opponents in the non-conference with both teams defeating Morgan State and Coppin State. Syracuse won 90-61 and 88-56, respectively. The two teams also faced Tennessee this season with Tennessee falling in a close 57-55 decision in Knoxville.
THE SERIES
This marks just the ninth meeting between the two teams with the series tied 4-4. Syracuse, ranked 23rd at the time, won the game last season in Blacksburg, 59-51. Panousis had 18 points to lead the Hokies while Young grabbed 14 rebounds. Butler notched 19 points and Day tallied 12 points, 14 rebounds for the Orange.
Syracuse also won the last time the two met in the Carrier Dome, 73-48 on Feb. 6, 2014.
Up Next: Virginia Tech will return to Cassell Coliseum to host Clemson on Monday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in a televised contest.
