Hokies return to the court, hosting Furman
Tech to face Paladins at 3 p.m. Wednesday

BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will be back on the court on Wednesday, Dec. 30 hosting Furman in a 3 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum. It is the second contest in a midweek double-header with the Virginia Tech men's team which squares off against West Virginia University at noon. Admission to the women's game is just $3 when you present your ticket stub from the men's game at the ticket window.

THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech defeated Radford, 47-40 the last time out. Regan Magarity led all scorers with a season-high 16 points. Rachel Camp tallied eight points and seven rebounds while Chanette Hicks added seven points and seven boards. Dominique Powell also had seven points whlie notching five rebounds, two steals and a block.

The Hokies trailed at the break and were down 25-18 early in the third quarter before going on a 13-0 run to take the lead as Tech held the Highlanders scoreless for 8:32 of the third frame. Radford looked to make a push in the fourth quarter, using an 8-2 run to cut into the Hokies’ 34-29 lead and go up 36-35. The teams traded baskets before Magarity and Camp hit back-to-back layups to spark a 6-0 run that gave Tech the lead for good.

Vanessa Panousis leads the Hokies on the season, averaging 11.8 points per game. Hannah Young is adding 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds. Hicks is chipping in 9.4 ppg, tallying 2.8 steals and 3.8 assists per game. Magarity leads on the boards with 6.1 rpg and chipping in 8.6 ppg.

THE PALADINS
Furman fell to Appalachian State 92-78 in the team’s last game. Holli Wilkins dropped in 16 points for the Paladins while Cierra Carter added 16 points and pulled down six rebounds. Tiara Wood and Kaitlyn Duncan each had 13 points.

Furman was up 45-37 at the break against App State, but the Paladins struggled offensively during the third quarter as the Moutaineers held a 27-13 advantage to go on top 64-58 heading into the final frame. In the last ten minutes, Furman cut it to three (71-68) with 6:34 remaining, but the Mountaineers responded with six unaswered to push the lead back to nine. Furman got no closer than five the rest of the way.

Wilkins leads the Paladins with 14.5 points per game. Whitney Bunn is adding 12.8 ppg and has tallied 71 assists this season. Carter is notching 11.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

The Hokies and Paladins have not played a common opponent in the non-conference season, but Furman faced off against the ACC’s Clemson back in November, defeating the Lady Tigers 70-49.

THE SERIES
This marks just the third meeting between the two programs. The last time they met was Dec. 29, 2007 in Blacksburg with the Hokies winning 82-49. Former Tech player Brittany Cook had 22 points to lead all scorers.
