UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After getting into foul trouble, junior guard Vanessa Panousis played just 25 minutes, but made the most of it, tallying 16 points to lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team past Penn State 64-59 on Thursday night in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Panousis went a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, including 4-of-4 in the final 30 seconds to help the Hokies (6-1) secure the win over the Lady Lions (3-4). In addition, Panousis knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to move into third place on the Virginia Tech career record list, surpassing Sarah Hicks’ (1997-2002) 157 threes.

Hannah Young added 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Chanette Hicks chipped in 10 points and dished out six assists. Regan Magarity notched nine points and eight boards.

“Really proud of our team to be able to go on the road and get the win at a tough place to play,” head coach Dennis Wolff said. “I thought we came out really strong in the first quarter, but then got into some foul trouble and allowed Penn State to get back into it. Our team was able to make enough plays to win the game and I’m really proud of them.”

The Hokies came out firing in the first quarter, shooting 50 percent from the field, including a 3-of-6 clip from outside the arc. Tech also forced the Lady Lions into 10 turnovers for seven points as the Hokies led 21-12 at the end of the opening frame.

Both teams were sluggish offensively in the second quarter, but the Hokies pushed their lead to 15 (27-12) while holding PSU to just one point in the first five minutes. Tech took its largest lead of the first 20 minutes, going up 29-13 off a layup from Powell. The Lady Lions answered, closing out the half with an 8-0 run to cut the Hokies lead to 29-21 at the break.

Penn State held the advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the Hokies 21-15 to cut Tech’s lead to two heading into the final 10 minutes. The Lady Lions tied it up in the opening minute of the fourth, but Panousis and Young hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Tech lead back to six with 8:09 on the clock.

PSU and Tech traded baskets over the next seven minutes with the Lady Lions cutting it to a four-point game (58-54) heading into the final minute. Sidney Cook hit two free throws to push the Tech lead back to six, but a 3-pointer from Lindsey Spann would pull PSU back within three with 31 seconds to go. Panousis went perfect from the line in the final seconds to secure the Hokies’ win.

Spann led PSU with 20 points. Teniya Page added 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tallied four assists.

Tech led on the boards, pulling down 41 rebounds to PSU’s 32, but the Lady Lions held the slight advantage in the turnover battle forcing 23 while giving the ball up 22 times.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. when the Hokies travel to Knoxville, Tennessee to take on the No. 8/8 Tennessee Lady Vols.
