GREENSBORO, N.C. – After an historic run into the ACC quarterfinals, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team saw it come to an end as the Hokies fell to the No. 7/6 Florida State Seminoles 82-43 at the Greensboro Coliseum on Friday evening.
“I told the team in the locker room that they gave us and all the people who follow our program a week to remember,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I don’t think anybody thought we would be sitting here on Friday night. We knew going in that it was going to be a challenge. I’ve thought all along that Florida State is a Final Four type team. They are well coached, they have depth, so even if we hadn’t played two days prior, it would have been tough task for us.”
Vanessa Panousis and Rachel Camp led the Hokies with nine points each, while Hannah Young and Khadedra Croker both added five points for Tech. Sidney Cook led the Hokies on the boards with five.
The Noles went on a 14-2 run to start the first half that was broken by a Panousis three pointer five minutes into the contest. Florida State continued to power through the Hokie defense going on a 12-2 run to take a 26-7 lead that was ended by a Rachel Camp layup with 7:32 left to play in the half.
The Hokies were unable to get anything going for the remainder of the first half as Florida State took a 41-17 lead into the break.
The second half played out much the same as the first with the Noles taking their largest lead of the game, going up by 42 with 6:22 on the clock. The Hokies ultimately fell to the Seminoles 82-43.
FSU shot 57.6 percent from the field, connecting on 34-of-59. Tech was 13-of-47, shooting 27.7 percent. The Noles also held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding Tech 41-21. Florida State also tallied 44 points in the paint to the Hokies’ 14.
Senior Kelsey Conyers played in her final game, scoring four points, for the Hokies on Friday, ending a career that saw her rise from walk-on to scholarship player.
“You know, she’s so positive within the team,” said Panousis about Conyers. “She’s the glue to our team. She keeps us together, always positive, and she’s a great leader, as well. I think when you have those characteristics as a person, you can’t really go wrong.”
