BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team outscored No. 20/19 Florida State in the second half, but was unable to overcome the halftime deficit as the Seminoles claimed a 59-44 win on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
Hannah Young dropped in a career-high 19 points, shooting 53.3 percent from the field and connecting on 3-of-7 from outside the arc. Taijah Campbell added 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
The Hokies (9-10, 0-6 ACC) were without starting point guard Vanessa Panousis today, who was out sick.
“I commend the team,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “I thought we played really hard and throughout the game played good defense. We hurt ourselves in the first half, turning the ball over too much and having too many wasted possessions. I thought we cleaned that up in the second half and inched our way back a little bit closer, but we’re still struggling on the offensive end and that’s a problem.”
Florida State got out to a lead early in the first half, but the Hokies kept it close, trailing by nine (18-9) just past the midway point. The Seminoles were up 23-13 with 6:59 to go in the half before both teams went on a two-minute drought. FSU broke the scoreless streak and closed out the half with a 9-1 run to take a 32-14 lead into the break.
The Seminoles extended their lead coming out of the break, going up by 22, 36-14 with 17:31 on the clock. Tech went to work, going on a 19-4 run, including 10 points from Young, to cut the FSU lead to 40-31 with 11:36 to go. FSU answered, outscoring the Hokies 11-2 to pull ahead 51-33 with six and a half minutes to play. Tech would get it down to a 12-point difference, but that is as close as the Hokies would come in the second half as the Seminoles held on for the win.
Shakayla Thomas had 19 points for the Seminoles (18-2, 4-1 ACC) while Maegan Conwright added 12. Thomas, Brittany Brown and Kai James led FSU on the boards, grabbing seven rebounds each.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, Jan. 23 when they host Wake Forest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum and will air on RSN/Fox.
