DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team faltered on the road at No. 16/14 Duke, falling 65-40 Thursday evening in ACC action at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Vanessa Panousis led the Hokies (9-9, 0-5 ACC) with 14 points. Hannah Young added nine points. Taijah Campbell pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and tallied a pair of steals on the defensive side.
“Credit Duke. I think that as the game went on their size wore us down,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. ‘I thought we had pretty good pace to start the game, made some shots which gave us some confidence, but then we had trouble with either not getting to them inside quickly enough and giving them second shots.”
The teams kept it close early in the first half with the Hokies going on top 16-13 off a layup from Sidney Cook at the 13:05 mark. Duke answered though, going on a 17-0 run over the next seven minutes to take the 30-16 lead with 6:26 to go in the half.
Panousis broke the Tech drought, connecting from long range to cut it to 30-19. The Hokies trailed by 14 with just over four minutes to go, but a pair of free throws from Dominique Powell followed by a three from Young pulled the Hokies within single-digits (33-24) with 2:43 remaining. The Blue Devils scored the final four points of the half to take a 37-24 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, Tech cut it to 11 as Panousis hit a layup, but the Blue Devils again surged ahead, using an 11-0 run to go on top 48-26. The Hokies scored six straight as a three-pointer from Young cut it to 16 with 11:33 to play. That is as close as the Hokies would get as Duke outscored Tech 16-8 in the final 10 minutes
Rebecca Greenwell led all scorers with 21 points for the Blue Devils (12-5, 3-1 ACC) Oderah Chidom and Elizabeth Williams recorded nine points each. Azura Stevens grabbed 13 rebounds.
Duke connected on 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the field, including a 50 percent clip (8-of-16) from outside the arc. Tech hit 24.6 percent (14-of-57) from the field and was 9-of-33 from long range. Despite the Blue Devils leading 41-29 on the boards, the Hokies held a slight 13-12 advantage in second chance points.
The Hokies will return to the court on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. when they host No. 20/19 Florida State.
