BLACKSBURG – It was all Hokies in the Virginia Tech women’s basketball game at Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday night as freshman Rachel Camp notched her third double-double of the season and tied a freshman record for most points scored in an 80-44 victory over North Carolina Central.
Camp scored 29 points, a team season-high as well, on 11 of 17 shooting from the floor and included three 3-point baskets and a 4 for 7 night from the foul line. She added a game-high 12 rebounds, eight offensive, for her second consecutive double-double – she had 16 and 13 Saturday versus Longwood.
“Any win is a good win, but I think you have to have a little bit of respect for what Central has gone through. This is their third game in five days and have been traveling all over the place,” Tech coach Dennis Wolff said. “So, I think their players tried hard, but they probably didn’t have their ‘A’ game.”
Tech (6-4) could almost do no wrong in the first half against the Eagles, as the team scored the game’s first 10 points and led by 24 at 28-4 after a 14-0 run over a six-minute span that finished with a Samantha Hill 3-pointer with 6:36 left until the break.
The Hokies shot 51 percent from the floor in the opening stanza (50 percent for the game), had 13 assists on 17 baskets, scored 16 second-chance points on 14 offensive rebounds and led 47-15 heading into the locker rooms.
The 32-point margin was the second largest ever, trailing only a 36-point advantage against Southern Miss on Dec. 28, 2004
“A credit to our players, particularly in the first half,” Wolff said. “We had good energy. We were very unselfish. We rebounded the ball and we shot the ball well. Sami gave us a great lift off the bench and Hannah (Young) and Rachel played well throughout the whole game.
“Getting second and third chances early in the game kind of set them (NC Central) back on their heels and gave us a good cushion.“
The lead never dipped below 31 after intermission as the Hokies put three players in double figures. Joining Camp, who registered her team-leading eighth game with at least 10, was Hill with a career-high 15 points, included four 3-point baskets, and Hannah Young added 10.
Vanessa Panousis was held to just five points, but handed out a game-high eight assists, with Hill adding five assists and Camp dishing out four.
“I give Sami and Rachel a lot of credit there at the end,” Wolff said. “They had two or three assists there at the end, where they could have just gone in there and forced shots up. They got baskets for the other players which is very good thing. It speaks to the character of these kids.
“(Tonight), Vanessa didn’t have to shoot as well as she normally shoots, but I think she was really sharp in the first half moving the ball and that got us playing in a nice flow.”
NC Central (2-7) had one player – Khyra Conerly – reach double figures, as she led the Eagles with 22 points. Entering the game, Racquel Davis was the team’s leading scoring, averaging more than 17 a game, but was held to just four points.
After dropping its first of a six-game home stand, Tech has won its last two by more than 32 points. That home stretch will continue on Sunday with a game against Western Carolina and a scheduled Noon tip.
