GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Freshman Rachel Camp led all scorers with 21 points but it wasn’t enough as the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team fell to Florida, 73-44 on Monday night in a road game at the O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida.

“I thought Florida did a good job,” said head coach Dennis Wolff. “They sped us up and really took us out of our ability to run our offense. We are a young team and we have a lot of things to work on. You don’t want to really take much out of a loss, but again there are a lot of areas we can correct.”

Camp dropped in 17 of her 21 points in the second half for the Hokies (4-3). She also led Tech on the boards with eight rebounds. Hannah Young added eight points and seven rebounds.

Florida took the lead early in the first half and was up 10-2 after the first four minutes of play, but the Hokies used a 9-2 run to close it to 12-11 with 11:05 to go. The Gators answered and held their largest lead of the half on top 31-19 with 1:20 on the clock. With five seconds remaining in the half, Young pulled up on a three-pointer only to be fouled. She drained all three to send Tech into the break down nine, 31-22.

Coming out of the intermission, the Gators took control going on an 18-5 run to go up 49-26 in the first five minutes. Florida extended its advantage, taking a 27 (57-30) point lead at the 10:45 mark. Tech would get no closer than 23 the rest of the way.

Cassie Peoples led Florida (5-1) with 19 points while Kayla Lewis added 15. Lewis and Haley Lorenzen had five rebounds each.

The Gators forced 24 turnovers, capitalizing on it with 28 points. Tech forced 20 turnovers, resulting in 17 points. The teams were even in the paint with 20 points each, but Florida dropped in eight from outside the arc while the Hokies connected on just one long-range shot.

The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum to face Northwestern on Thursday, Dec. 4 in a 7 p.m. game as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
