THE HOKIES (4-2)
Virginia Tech defeated East Tennessee State, 72-65, the last time out. Rachel Camp led all scorers with 21 points. Hannah Young tallied her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Vanessa Panousis posted 13 points and handed out eight assists in the win.
The Hokies led 36-27 at the half, but the Bucs came back in the second frame, tying it up at 57-57 with six minutes to go. Tech and ETSU traded points with the Bucs holding 61-60 advantage at the 5:14 mark. The Hokies responded, closing out the game with a 12-4 run, including eight points from Camp to secure the win.
Camp is leading the Hokies on the season, averaging 15.5 points per game. Regan Magarity is averaging a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Panousis is adding 12.4 points and handing out 4.2 assists per game. Taijah Campbell is notching 10.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
THE GATORS (4-1)
Florida picked up an 81-73 win over Georgetown in the team’s last outing. Four players scored in double-digits for the Gators with Kayla Lewis leading the way with 19 points. Cassie Peoples added 17 points and Carlie Needles chipped in 15 points while grabbing eight rebounds and handing out six assists. Haley Lorenzen posted 10 points.
After trailing 38-34 at the break, Florida used a strong second half to push past the Hoyas, outscoring Georgetown 47-35.
Ronni Williams is averaging 12.8 points per game for the Gators. Lewis is recording 12 ppg, pulling down 5.6 rpg and has tallied 12 steals on the season. Peoples is averaging 11.4 ppg and 5.6 apg while Needles is averaging 11.2 ppg and a team-best 8.8 rpg.
THE SERIES
Virginia Tech and Florida have met just three times previously with the Gators holding the 2-1advantage in the all-time series. The Hokies won the last meeting between the two teams when the Gators came to Cassell Coliseum last season. Tech claimed the 71-59 decision. Panousis led the Hokies with 24 points while Hannah Young had 10 points and six rebounds. Top returner from the game for the Gatoris is Lewis who had nine points and 11 rebounds.
