THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech defeated Providence 72-69 the last time out. Rachel Camp led all scorers in the game, tallying 22 points while grabbing six rebounds and handing out five assists. Camp connected on 6-of-9 from the field and 10-of-14 from the line. Regan Magarity added 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the field and hitting 7-of-9 from the line. Magarity and Camp combined for 15 of the Hokies final 17 points of the game, helping to hold off a late surging Friars’ team.
Magarity is leading the Hokies on the season, averaging a double-double with 15.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Camp is adding 13.5 ppg while Vanessa Panousis is adding 10.0 points and handing out 3.5 assists per game. Taijah Campbell is notching 10.3. points and 7.0 rebounds per game.
THE MONARCHS
Old Dominion fell to Duke, 82-66 the last time out, but has claimed wins over Presbyterian (41-26 and William & Mary (66-58) in the early season. Tiffany Minor tallied 16 points and six rebounds for the Monarchs against the Blue Devils. Chelisa Painter added 14 points and Jennie Smims tallied 12. ODU trailed by just five, 36-31 at the break, but the Blue Devils outscored the Monarchs 46-35 in the second half to seal the win.
Simms is leading Old Dominion, averaging 13.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while Painter is adding 12.0 points and 6.0 rebounds. Minor is just short of averaging double-digit points with 9.7 ppg, but is pulling down 6.3 rpg and handing out 2.0 apg.
THE SERIES
The Hokies and Monarchs have a long history, having first met during Tech’s inagural 1976-77 season. ODU holds the 20-8 record in the series, but the Hokies have won three of the last four meetings between the two teams including last season’s 73-61 decision in Norfolk. Campbell recorded a double-double in the game with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Hannah Young also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Panousis chipped in 12 points and handed out five assists.
Odegua Oigbokie is the top returner for ODU from the game, having dropped in nine points. Minor and Painter each had four points.
