BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to open the 2014-15 season on the road, traveling to George Mason for a 5 p.m. game on Friday, Nov. 14 in the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia.

THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech returns three starters from last season’s team including point guard Vanessa Panousis who was second on the team in scoring with 12.4 points per game while handing out a freshman record setting 121 assists. Panousis also set the Tech freshman record for three-pointers made with 58, breaking a record that had stood for more than 20 years.

Also returning is Hannah Young who averaged 6.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Taijah Campbell is also back after recording 5.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game last season. Campbell was also strong on the defensive side, tallying 45 blocks last season to rank 10th on the Tech single-season record list.

Tech also added seven newcomers to the roster this season including Brielle Blaire, Rachel Camp, Sidney Cook, Khadedra Croker, Regan Magarity, Lindsey Oblitey and Dominique Powell. Cook will sit out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

THE PATRIOTS
George Mason returns four starters from last season’s team, including the conference’s leading scorer, Taylor Brown who avearaged 18.9 points per game, earning a spot on the A-10’s All-Conference Third Team. The Patriots finished the 2013-14 season 8-23 overall and 1-15 in the league.

Also returning for the Patriots are starters Talisha Watts (6.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg) and Reana Mohamed (3.2 ppg, 1.0 rpg). Mason added nine players during the offseason but four will sit out due to transfer rules.

THE SERIES
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 5-2 and has won the last three meetings between the two teams, but Tech and Mason have not met since 2009. This also marks the first meeting between the teams under current head coaches Dennis Wolff and Nyla Milleson.

Former Hokie Utahya Drye led Tech in the game recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Tech’s Lindsay Biggs led all scorers with 18 points.

Virginia Tech is 74-39 all-time against teams from the Atlantic 10. The last A-10 team that the Hokies faced was Richmond last season. The Spiders won the game 64-56.

Up Next: The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum for the 2014-15 home opener as Tech hosts Maryland Eastern Shore in a noon game on Sunday, Nov. 16.
