BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team is set to open the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball tournament on Wednesday, March 5 against Clemson. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.

The Series
Virginia Tech and Clemson met less than a week ago in the Hokies’ final home game of the regular season. The Hokies defeated the Tigers, 74-48, on Thursday, Feb. 27 in Blacksburg.

Uju Ugoka led the Hokies with her 15th double-double of the season, recording 23 points and 11 rebounds. Vanessa Panousis tallied 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers that broke the Tech freshman single-season record, set by Sarah Hillyer during the 1989-90 campaign. Hannah Young added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

This marks the first meeting between the two teams at a neutral site.

The Hokies
The last time out, the Hokies fell to Maryland, 87-48, in College Park. Maryland took the early lead in the opening half and was up 34-22 at the break. Tech was unable to go on a run in the second frame as the Terrapins secured the win.

Panousis and Taijah Campbell tallied seven points each for the Hokies. Campbell also grabbed five rebounds, while Serafina Maulupe and Maddison Penn added six points each.

Ugoka leads Tech on the year, averaging 18.3 points and 9.5 rebounds. She is eighth in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. Panousis is notching 12.7 points and chipping in 4.1 assists. Monet Tellier is adding 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

The Tigers
Clemson ended its regular season with its match-up at Virginia Tech on Feb. 27. Nikki Dixon and Chancie Dunn led the Tigers with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Quinyotta Pettaway tallied eight points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Hokies led 34-22 coming out of halftime, but Clemson cut it to a three-possession game with 15:07 to play. Virginia Tech responded with a 25-5 run over the next ten minutes and took a 29-point lead with 4:10 to play, going up 67-38 and putting the game out of reach to secure the victory.

Dixon leads the Tigers on the season with 13.3 points per game. Pettaway is adding 10.0 ppg while grabbing a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game. Chelsea Lindsay has handed out 114 assists this season, averaging 3.9 per game.

Hokies at the Tournament
The Hokies’ last ACC Tournament victory came in 2007, when Tech downed Boston College, 60-54, in overtime at Greensboro Coliseum. Tech is 2-7 in first-round games since the Hokies joined the ACC for the 2004-05.

Former Hokie Carrie Mason Melat will be honored at the annual ACC Women’s Basketball Legends’ Luncheon on Saturday, March 8, prior to the 2014 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament Legends roster being introduced at halftime of the first semifinal game that evening.

Up Next: The winner of Wednesday’s contest will advance to meet fifth-seeded Syracuse in Thursday’s second round. That match-up is scheduled for 11 a.m., the earliest scheduled game on Thursday.
