BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team returns to the road to face Wake Forest on Thursday, Feb. 13. Game time has been changed from an 8:30 p.m. tip to a 6 p.m. start time at LJVM Coliseum due to inclement weather in Winston-Salem, N.C. The game will still be aired on RSN at 8:30 on delay.

The Hokies
The Hokies were edged in overtime by No. 14/17 NC State, 72-71, on Feb. 9 at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.

Virginia Tech led by 10 in the first half, but the Wolfpack used an 8-0 run to close out the half and cut the Tech lead to 30-28 going in to the break. NC State tied it up early in the second half, but Uju Ugoka scored seven points in a 9-0 Virginia Tech run as the Hokies again pushed out to a 10 point lead (44-34) with just over 12 minutes to go. The Hokies maintained the lead, but the Wolfpack kept it close and tied it up at 58-58 with 2:10 on the clock. Ugoka connected on a layup on Tech’s next possession, but NC State was able to get a runner in the lane with 26 seconds to play, tying it up at 60-60 to send it in to overtime.

The two teams traded baskets in the extra minutes with neither leading by more than four. The Wolfpack was up 70-66 with 1:31 to go, but the Hokies answered with a jumper from Vanessa Panousis followed by a three-pointer by Hannah Young with 27 seconds remaining. NC State hit a jumper with four seconds to go to take the lead. Tech had a chance but the long distance three hit the front of the rim as NC State held on for the win.

Ugoka led the Hokies with 20 points. Panousis and Monet Tellier recorded 16 points each and Tellier handed out six assists. Serafina Maulupe tallied nine points and played a career-high 27 minutes in the contest. Young led on the boards with seven rebounds.

Ugoka leads Tech on the year, averaging 19.5 points and 10.0 rebounds. The senior is one of three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She is third in the conference in scoring and rebounding. Panousis is notching 11.4 points and chipping in 4.0 assists while Tellier is adding 11.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists

The Demon Deacons
Wake Forest rallied back to defeat Pittsburgh, 74-70 the last time out on Feb. 9 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Pitt took a 40-23 lead into halftime after the Demon Deacons shot just 32.1 percent from the field in the opening frame. The second half was a different story as Wake dropped in 51 points to Pitt’s 30 while connecting on 68.2 percent, including a 57.1 percent clip from outside the arc.

Dearica Hamby tallied 32 points (23 in the second half) and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Deacs. Millesa Calicott added 14 points.

Hamby leads Wake on the season with 21.4 points per game. Chelsea Douglas is adding 18.8 points per game and is averaging 3.0 three-pointers per contest. Calicott is tallying 5.4 ppg and had connected on 27 threes this season.

The Series
The Hokies are looking to even up the series against Wake Forest as the Deacs hold a slight 11-10 advantage since the two teams met for the first time during the 1978-79 season. The Hokies claimed wins in both meetings last season, including a 62-52 victory in Winston-Salem last year. Former Hokie Alyssa Fenyn had 16 points while Tellier added 14. Ugoka posted 11 points and 11 rebounds. Douglas led the Deacs with 18 points.

This contest features two of the three players in the ACC averaging double-doubles with Ugoka and Hamby.

Up Next: The Hokies will remain on the road, traveling to Charlottesville to face Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 16 in a game scheduled for 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
