Tech takes to the road to face ACC newcomer Syracuse
The Hokies are set to play the Orange on Thursday at 7 p.m.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's basketball team will be back on the road, traveling north to face ACC newcomer Syracuse on Thursday, Feb. 6. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.

The Hokies
In their last game, the Hokies defeated Boston College, 70-63 in overtime, on Feb. 2 at Cassell Coliseum.

Tech trailed 34-29 at the break, but the Hokies rallied in the second half to outscore the Eagles, 27-22. Neither team could break away early in the second period, but Hannah Young knocked down a jumper to cut the BC lead to two and kickstart a 9-0 Virginia Tech run that put the Hokies on top 41-36 with 14:39 to go. BC responded with a run of its own to reclaim the advantage, up 50-45 with just over seven minutes to play. The Hokies were up 55-54 with 1:07 to go. BC knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining in the game, but the Hokies had a chance as Monet Tellier drove in to the lane and drew the foul with four seconds to go. Tellier hit the second of two free throws to send the game in to over time tied at 56-56. The Hokies dominated in overtime, forcing five turnovers and outscoring the Eagles 14-7 in the extra minutes.

Vanessa Panousis led Tech with 18 points. Tellier added 17 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out seven assists. Maddison Penn tallied 15 points for the Hokies and Young recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Uju Ugoka leads Tech on the season, averaging 19.7 points and 10.2 rebounds. The senior is one of three players in the Atlantic Coast Conference currently averaging a double-double. She is second in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding. Tellier is adding 11.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists while Panousis is notching 11.1 points and chipping in 4.1 assists.

The Orange
Syracuse fell to No. 8 Maryland, 89-64, the last time out on Feb. 2 in Syracuse. The Orange are receiving votes in both the AP and Coaches’ polls.

The Terrapins got out to a 46-29 lead at the break, but the Orange kept the scoring a little closer in the second half as Maryland held just a seven point, 43-35, advantage in the second frame.

Brittney Sykes had 22 points for the Orange. Brianna Butler and Taylor Ford added nine points each.

Sykes leads the Orange on the season with 17.7 points per game. Butler is adding 15.9 ppg. On the boards, Shakeya Leary is grabbing 7.8 rebounds per game. Rachel Coffey has handed out 87 assists on the season.

The Series
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series, 4-2, but the two teams have not met since Jan. 31, 2004, when both were members of the BIG EAST Conference. The Hokies claimed the 75-60 win on the road in Syracuse. Former Hokie standout Ieva Kublina had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Kerri Gardin, Tech’s 2014 ACC Legend, and Dawn Chriss added 14 points each.

This will mark the first time that the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team has played in the Carrier Dome.

Up Next: The Hokies will host NC State on Sunday, Feb. 9 in a 2 p.m. game at Cassell Coliseum. It will mark Tech’s annual Play4Kay game for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund for breast cancer awareness and research.
