CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team hit .326 on the attack, defeating Boston College 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23) on Friday afternoon at Power Gym in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
“We played a very scrappy Boston College team today and were able to come out on top,” said head coach Chris Riley. “Our team is playing very good volleyball right now.”
Lindsey Owens tallied 16 kills for the Hokies (17-14, 10-8 ACC) and picked up 13 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. In addition, Owens also tallied six blocks on the defensive side. LaTasha Samson-Akpan added 12 kills and secured seven blocks. Jordan Fish put up 36 assists with Kyra Coundourides adding 17.
Megan Beckwith was also strong on the defensive side with 17 digs while Amanda McKinzie tallied 12 digs and was just one kill shy of a double-double, knocking down nine.
The Hokies took the lead midway through the opening set, going on top 15-9 off a solo block from Samson-Akpan. BC answered, cutting it to one at 17-16, but the Hokies held off the push to pull back ahead 21-16. The Eagles again made a run and were able to close out the set outscoring the Hokies 9-1 to win 25-22.
In the second set, the teams kept it close and were knotted at 15 before the Hokies scored back-to-back points to go up 17-15 off a kill from Ashley Battle. Boston College kept it close as the teams were tied up again at 18. The Hokies broke it open with a 6-1 run, going on top 24-19. BC scored once more, but an Eagles’ error gave the Hokies the point to take the set 25-20.
Virginia Tech held the slight lead midway through the third set and was up 14-12 off a kill from Owens. The teams tied it up at 15, but Tech scored the next four to take a 19-15 lead. BC was unable to get a run going in the final rallies as the Hokies took a 2-1 lead in the match after winning the third 25-19.
Boston College took the lead in the fourth set and was up 12-9, forcing the Hokies to take a timeout. The Eagles maintained an advantage, but the Hokies chipped away at it, tying it up at 20 as Battle knocked down a kill. She followed that up with another kill followed by a pair from Owens to give the Hokies a 23-20 lead late in the set. The Eagles closed it to one at 24-23, but a BC error on the next rally gave Tech the point to win 25-23, securing the match 3-1.
Kam McLain led Boston College (11-18, 6-12 ACC) with 15 kills. Katty Workman added 13 kills.
Virginia Tech has finished the season strong, winning nine of its last 11 matches. The Hokies wait to see if they will receive an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Selections will be announced at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30 on ESPNU.
